Andrew Sinclair (b. 1975) is a Scottish figurative and landscape painter who graduated with an honours degree in Painting and Drawing from Duncan of Jordanstone College of Art & Design in Dundee in 1996. My practice centres on the human condition and the enduring landscape, primarily explored through the medium of oil paint. Grounded in figurative realism and narrative visual storytelling, my work seeks to capture not merely the form of a subject, but the quiet tension and inner atmosphere of a moment. Light is the core structural element in my work. Drawing on classical chiaroscuro, I employ sharp contrasts between deep shadow and vibrant illumination to construct spatial depth and convey emotional weight. Whether painting figure studies inspired by my surroundings in the Scottish Highlands, or depicting the changing light on the landscape, I approach each canvas as an investigation of presence, mood, and place. Ultimately, my goal is to create a reflective space for the viewer—one where light, shade, and subject converge to suggest a narrative that extends beyond the frame.
